About us
The Olford Bequest consists of a grant to at least five young people from Plymouth schools who are going to university each year. Of the five grants, two are reserved for students from Devonport High School for Boys. The grant is currently £1,200 spread over 3 years.
The bequest came into being in 1963, when Mrs Olford died (her husband had died some years previously) and left a sum of money in memory of their only son, who was killed in a flying accident during the Second World War. Both he and Mr Olford (who was a Tax Inspector) had been students at Devonport High School for Boys.
The grants are awarded in September after local interviews have taken place, normally in the Plymouth Council House, Armada Way. Grants are awarded to students who can demonstrate to the Trustees that they will spend the money effectively to “more fully enjoy their stay at University”. The ability to pass exams or buy books is therefore not a criterion which the Trustees will consider.
The fundamental requirement for the award is that all applicants must have completed their A Levels at a school or college within the geographical Plymouth City Council area.
Applications should be submitted to the Clerk of the Trustees at the address on the form by 30 June.
The Olford Bequest is administered in partnership between Plymouth City Council and The Rotary Club of Plymouth
